We are a mixed power farm – this means that we use both horse power and tractor power to work the land. We use two smaller tractors, a skidsteer, and several teams of draft horses to complete fieldwork, harvest crops, and care for the cattle.
Our horses are a breed called American Brabant. This is an old style breed that needs a minimal amount of grain to stay in good working condition throughout the year. They are low maintenance, have an easy going personality, and truly enjoy their work. They don’t like to be bored! Unlike a tractor, they are self reproducing. Each horse is named and taken excellent care of. Besides their usefulness, we really enjoy our relationship with each of them. Like people, each horse is unique! In the true definition of sustainability, they provide solar power for the farm and work in the woods during the winter.
When the fieldwork has ended for the season, the horses help Jason log in the woods. Please check out Legacy Horse Logging. Jason and his teams of American Brabants help the land owner manage his/her woods by using low impact methods of logging, thereby ensuring the woods can become and remain a legacy to be proud of.
The horses provide true independence from fossil fuels and we value the sustainability is affords our farm.
